Digital video cameras are quite sensitive to the color signatures of different light sources and do not of course respond like the human eye, which automatically corrects for color differences. A digital video image's "depth" can also suffer from poor lighting set-ups. Consequently, video production lighting is far more important to even a modest production than most novice directors and producers assume.

For example, sunlight has a bluish tint, fluorescent lights have a greenish tint, and incandescent lights have a reddish tint. Correcting for color, when your subject has two conflicting light sources illuminating it, is a matter of using gels or filters to help obscure or alter one of the light sources. You can then adjust your camera settings to the remaining color signature.

Creating depth is simply a matter of lighting your subject from different angles and positions. Your "key" light illuminates your subject, your "fill" light reduces harsh shadows on your subject, and your background light separates your subject from the background. Some people also suggest a "back light," illuminating your subject from behind to add even more depth.
