From the hidden depths of the ocean underworld to the shallow waters of a backyard pool, shooting underwater video is not only fun, but with the right kind of equipment it is an impressive addition to any project.
If you’re looking to shoot underwater dvDepot offers underwater gear rentals that have been discounted for the summer! We carry three great models of underwater camera housing: the Equinox HD8 for deep shoots, the Ewa-Marine for shoots close to the surface, and for those adrenaline junkies a waterproof housing for the HD GoPro Hero. For audio purposes, the Lectrosonics MM400C Transmitter and M152 Mic are suitable for water-based shoots. Feel confident shooting in the ocean, in the pool, or on the beach, with this durable, waterproof gear.
EQUINOX HD8 UNDERWATER CAMERA HOUSING
Our Equinox HD8 goes with the Sony HVR-V1U Camcorder, and can be rented separately or in a package. It can be brought to underwater depths of up to 250 ft (75 meters) and has a BRS (Ballast Release System) for easy travel. This is useful if trouble occurs on a dive; just pull the release pin and the Equinox shoots straight to the surface. The housing is corrosion-resistant and constructed with rugged and durable material. Les Stroud, pictured right, of Discovery Channel’s, “Survivorman,” uses the Equinox to document his underwater survival skills.
EWA-MARINE UNDERWATER CAMERA HOUSING (SPLASH BAG)
The different models of the Ewa-Marine, commonly referred to as Splash Bags, can be used with a wider variety of cameras such as the the Sony PMW-EX1, Panasonic AG-HVX200, and Panasonic DVX’s. This housing enables the user to film up to 33 ft (10 meters) below water, and will give the camera the best possible protection while being fully operable. It is perfect for shallow diving, and sandy, dusty, humid, or foul weather conditions. It features a double laminated PVC Construction and an Optical Glass port. The bag shape makes it easy to carry and the included weight straps help to achieve buoyancy. We have rented the Ewa-Marine to MTV’s, “Made,” for episodes focused on a water sport, such as surfing as seen in the picture from the series on the left.
HD GoPro Heros are perfect for photographers and videographers who are also adrenaline junkies both in water and on land. Take this portable camera with you on your summer vacation and capture great footage. When encased in the waterproof housing the camera can be taken up to 180 ft (60 meters) underwater. With the appropriate optional mounting accessories in place, shoot full 1920 x 1080p HD video hands-free on your helmet, vehicle, surfboard, and anywhere else you can stick a mount. Our sister production company, DV Films, used the GoPro and waterproof housing to capture footage, such as the fish on the right, for a corporate video about the Coyaba Beach Resort in Grenada.
LECTROSONICS MM400C UHF WATERPROOF TRANSMITTER & M152 MIC
For audio purposes, the Lectrosonics MM400C Transmitter is ideal for use in heavy rain, humidity, and water-based shoots, and can be submerged underwater. The result is outstanding audio quality, plus the extended operating range of the best analog wireless systems, in a package that can withstand the most extreme moisture and temperature environments. It has a machined finish which provides a non-corrosive housing, preventing rust and oxidation. The MM400C comes with the Lectrosonics M152, a highly sensitive omnidirectional microphone, which is water resistant and features a watertight mini connection. The crew, one of whom is pictured left, on Discovery Channel’s, “Deadliest Catch,” use this audio gear in the harshest environments.
