The market for high-end DV format digital video cameras is dominated by three major players: Canon, Panasonic, and JVC. Sony makes quality cameras, but they are relatively newer to the market, having focused until relatively recently instead on their consumer and broadcast lines. As a result, the buyers for these types of cameras are dedicated mostly to either Canon or Panasonic.

In the opinions of many professional cinematographers who have used the various cameras in this category, the Panasonic SDX 900 is considered the best. This camera represents a marriage of Panasonic's high definition (HD) VariCam and their mini-DV cameras. The result is a camera that performs more like the HD camera but without the stratospheric price tag.

The phrase "24p" refers to the fact that the Panasonic SDX 900, DVX 100, and DVX 100A shoot at 24 frames per second mode with progressive scanning. For those that do not know, the standard for film cameras is to record at 24 frames per second. Consequently, these cameras give the captured video a more film-like look. 24p is only one mode on these cameras, though, so you can shoot in other modes, as well.
